As someone who read Earth Abides 20-25 years ago and has fond memories of the book, I was pleasantly surprised to see it turned into a series. There’s always a little anxiety when something like this happens, as you hope they stay true to the book and live up to your visual expectations, and you’re aware that it’s hard for a movie or series to achieve what you envisioned when you read it. – With that in mind, I’m watching the first episode with some bias, but I’m trying to see it as both a “new” story and a welcome reminder of one of my favorite books in the dystopian/post-apocalypse genre.
There’s room for a good pandemic narrative post-Covid
The book was written and set in the ’40s, while the series is a modern interpretation, so the technology and general “feel” of the setting is different from the book. The pacing is naturally brisk and noticeably rushed to pack character development and the main plot into the first episode of a miniseries. Episode 1 successfully builds a compelling story that seems to do Stewart’s themes justice.
I’m looking forward to the rest
It invites both fans of the book and new viewers to consider humanity’s place in a changed world. The acting is good so far, production and effects look decent, maybe a bit sparse (you’d expect pileups, etc.). One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
