Investigating judge Iman struggles with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran
When his gun goes missing, he suspects his wife and daughters, imposing draconian measures that strain family ties as society’s rules crumble.. Director Mohammad Rasoulof was originally scheduled to attend the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the section One jury Certain Regard. .
On May 12, 2024, Rasouloff announced that he had managed to flee Iran and was staying in an undisclosed location in Europe
However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan due to the deadly collapse of buildings. On 8 May 2024, Rasouloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, as well as whipping, a fine and confiscation of his property. On May 24, 2024, Rasouloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes, and on the red carpet held photos with two of the film’s actors, Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh.
But then the story starts to fall apart
The line between a fake document and a masterpiece and somehow this film manages to be both. As an Iranian I was amazed by the cinematography and how it was shot without a warrant in Iran’s capital Tehran (most of it). The plot is mostly well written and most of the characters play under the guise of real characters in Iran, two of which end up as women fighting the dictator…
The editing is a problem and makes the movie boring
The story and dialogues fade and become irrational just because the director pushes the dialogues to be politically justified! Rasulof is at a loss for his character development and yet the film runs 160 minutes. It is officially the last film Rasulof directed in Iran, as a result of the ban on returning to his homeland Overall, this film does a lot to share a massage on the future of Iran, as it contains a history of a certain generation (youth and teenagers)
