A French woman drinks makgeolli in Korea after losing her livelihood, then teaches French to two Korean women. In “Close-up: The Best Films and Other Results” of 2024 (2024). Iris is French, but currently in Korea. We have no idea why she ended up here, but we know that she has to make ends meet, to show creativity and start teaching French using her unique “method”. The film is very down-to-earth, but very poetic, and interestingly, it revolves around language and communication. And sometimes misunderstandings in communication. Or the refusal to communicate or listen. It is also about the social and interpersonal distance between people who know each other and those who do not, and how this is “accepted”; the distance can change or differ depending on various factors, such as cultural norms, the place of conversation, the mood, etc. The plot is simple, but we are more interested in the nuances. We are not interested in what HAPPENS to Iris or other characters, but how they react at a given moment in the conversation, what they feel and say, and how they do it. Apart from that, Iris’s character is really interesting and gradually some fragments of her true nature are revealed, but there are many things to consider. Very beautiful, authentic and complex work, yet simple.
